Nampons and nose clips can both stop nosebleeds fast, and there are a few other OTC methods, as well. But which of these is most effective, how do these methods work, and which one should you buy?
Nose Clips vs Nampons
Swim nose clips have been used to stop nosebleeds for a long time.
A swim nose clip is a small, padded device that fits over your nose and gently pinches it closed. It's designed to keep water out of your nose, but it can also help to promote clotting.
When you have a nosebleed, you're supposed to sit down, lean forward, and pinch the soft part of your nose for 10 minutes. At no point should you release your grip, lest the blood continue to flow. Nose clips work by performing this nose pinch for you.
It makes life a little easier and means you don't need to worry about accidentally removing your fingers.
You can use nose clips designed for swimmers and you can also purchase a nose clip set advertised for the treatment of nosebleeds.
Unlike nose clips, Nampons are not repurposed and have been designed solely for the treatment of nosebleeds.
Nampons are small, disposable nose plugs that you place inside the nostril when you have a nosebleed. It's a form of nose packing that helps to stop the bleeding, but Nampons also contain a clotting agent that speeds up the body's normal clotting process.
As a result, your nosebleed should stop sooner and without any mess, as all of that excess blood soaks into the Nampon.
Nampons are small, discreet, and non-stick, so they don't cause any pain or discomfort when they are removed.
A Nose Clip or a Nampon?
Both nose clips and Nampons are effective, but as Nampons are designed specifically for the treatment of nosebleeds, they are faster and cleaner.
Nampons are also more convenient and comfortable to use. They soak up all of the blood while expanding slowly to ensure you're not left with a soggy mess like you would be with a tissue.
If you suffer from regular nosebleeds, it's worth keeping a box of Nampons nearby. Keep one in your medicine cabinet, take one in your bag or backpack when you go to the gym, and be sure to leave a few pads in your pocket. You never know when you will need one.
If you're using nose clips, look for ones that use premium soft silicone and don't apply too much pressure. It should be easy to apply, and it should also be relatively cheap.
There are nose clips out there that cost upwards of $10 and are advertised for use during nosebleeds. But they're not that much different from the cheap clips marketed toward swimmers.
Check eBay and Amazon for packs of effective nose clips. The user reviews should tell you if they are any good.
What Is The Best Medicine For Nose Bleeding?
The easiest way to stop nosebleeds fast is to use Nampons. And if you don't have any Nampons to hand, you can simply follow the usual procedure—sit, lean, pinch, and wait.
However, there are also a few over-the-counter medications that could treat nosebleeds.
Many OTC decongestant sprays, including Vicks Sinex, Dristan, and Synephrine, can be sprayed into the bleeding nostril followed by pinching the nose.
However, while these treatments might stop the bleeding quicker, they can also cause problems with excessive use. They may leave your nose dry, cracked, and irritated, leading to more nosebleeds and nasal issues at a later date.
As noted many times in this blog, one of the main causes of nosebleeds is dry air and irritation. If your nose is dry, the delicate membrane will crack, potentially exposing the blood vessels underneath. When these vessels rupture, you have a nosebleed, and if the problem persists as a result of excessive decongestant use, it will happen again and again.
Chronic nosebleeds are worrying, but more often than not, they occur as a result of extremely dry temperatures and excessive picking/blowing, all of which can irritate the nasal lining.
Will Afrin Stop A Nosebleed?
If your nose bleeds, you can use Afrin to stop it. Just spray it into the bleeding nostril, pinch the soft portion of your nose, and wait. As above, you should refrain from using these medications excessively and seek alternatives if you suffer from chronic nosebleeds.
Is Naseptin Used For Nosebleeds?
Naseptin is a cream used in the treatment of infections caused by staphylococcal. It helps with the infection and the crusting that results. It could prevent nosebleeds that occur as a result of infection or nose-picking.
Naseptin contains chlorhexidine hydrochloride and neomycin sulfate.
Chlorhexidine hydrochloride is an effective antiseptic known to work against bacteria and fungi. Neomycin sulfate is an antibiotic and so it's also effective against bacteria. It works by preventing the bacteria from dividing and multiplying.
You can't buy Naseptin over the counter. It can only be prescribed by a doctor.
How Do You Use A Nose Clamp For A Bloody Nose?
A nose clamp fits over the soft portion of your nose, below the bridge. Just press, clip, and hold. It will halt the flow of blood and give your body time to form a clot.
While the nose clip is in place, sit down and lean forward slightly, as this prevents the blood from flowing down the back of your nose and into your throat, where it could cause nausea and vomiting, as well as breathing difficulties.
Wait for at least 10 minutes without releasing pressure on the clamp. When the time has passed, remove the clamp and check that the blood has stopped. If not, repeat this process.
Once the blood stops flowing, refrain from blowing or picking your nose. It will be tempting, as it might feel a little stuffy and irritated, but picking/blowing could remove the clot and start the bleeding all over again.
You should also avoid any strenuous activity, including bending over and don't take a hot bath or shower.
