What causes nosebleeds at night?
Nighttime nosebleeds in children are very common and usually not a cause for serious concern. While they can be scary for both parents and children, especially when they interrupt sleep, they're typically caused by everyday factors that can be managed. Here are the most common causes:
- Dry air from heating/cooling systems during sleep
- Seasonal allergies causing nasal irritation
- Recent upper respiratory infections
- Rubbing or scratching the nose during sleep
- Vigorous nose-blowing before bed
- Recent physical activity before bedtime
- Sports injuries from earlier in the day
What to do when they happen
Keep these simple steps in mind to help your child get back to sleep quickly:
- Have your child sit up straight and lean slightly forward (not back!)
- Place a Nampons™ Kids nasal plug gently in the bleeding nostril
- Keep them sitting upright for 10-15 minutes
- Use a cold compress or ice pack on the bridge of their nose
- Avoid having them blow their nose
- Keep them from lying flat until bleeding has completely stopped
