Nampons are impregnated with micro-oxidized cellulose, a hypoallergenic clotting agent used since the 1950s for mild to moderate bleeds.

Ingredients

Sodium salt of oxidized cellulose(active), PVA sponge, polyethylene glycol and a surfactant.

Expiration

Nampons™ will remain sterile and effective for three years. The expiration date is clearly marked on every box and product.

Suitable for kids and adults

Nampons are suitable for children as young as four, adults and seniors.

To use on smaller noses, simply trim the Nampons™ to size for a comfortable fit.

Dimensions

Nampons™ are designed to be small and discreet so you can keep at home, in the car and in the office to always be prepared.

A single Nampon™ is only 1.75" x 0.5" and is roughly as thick as a stick of chewing gum.

How to Use

  1. Insert gently into the affected nostril. Trim if needed for smaller noses.
  2. Apply gentle pressure until the bleed stops. The Nampon™ will expand on contact and deliver the clotting agent to stop the bleed.
  3. Remove carefully when the bleeding stops and repeat if necessary.

Another Effective Tool for the Toolbox

I received both adult and adolescent Nampon samples to try out after I heard about them from a friend who is in the field of wilderness medicine. I have a background in military medicine, austere medicine, wilderness medicine, tactical EMS, and civilian EMS. I am currently a supervisor over the medical staff at a state-run crisis center and I serve as a camp medic for a youth camp. Epistaxis is an issue at both places, especially during the winter months here, because it is a high plains desert so the air is extremely dry and thin due to the higher altitude of the Rocky Mountain states. If you travel to a popular place like Yellowstone National Park you will see a lot of tourists suffering from severe nosebleeds if they are traveling from a humid area and/or an area of lower altitude.
With mostly effective treatment, I have improvised tamponades using rolled gauze, feminine hygiene tampons, balloon catheters, etc. I have also used treatment-specific products like Merocel and Rhino Rockets to great effect. An issue with some of these is cost. Others are slow to use. Most are bulky. Many are expensive and/or hard to procure for civilian use. Most are relatively heavy, which is not an issue for most people, but is a major consideration for hiking longer distances. Nampons are relatively inexpensive (no need to horde them), lightweight (great for backpackers, thru-hikers, climbers, etc), compact (these would be ideal for first aid kits if you have a need for epistaxis treatment), have durable foil packaging (an important consideration outdoor use) and are easy to resupply through Walmart, Amazon and other sources.
This is a sample of one, so take it for what it's worth, but I have had a chance to use an adult Nampon once already. I was the patient and I have a long history of both anterior and posterior nose bleeds, sometimes requiring cauterizations. It has been very dry here and it has taken very little for my nose to bleed, including doing something simple like washing my face. A few days ago I had a spontaneous anterior nosebleed that was not readily clotting with pressure, plus I do not have the patience to pinch my nose for 20 minutes. I was able to easily self-apply the Nampon, which readily expanded when contacting blood, and I was able to continue what I was doing with both hands with the Nampon in place. 20 minutes later I was able to efforstlessly remove it with no disruption of the blood clot. It was fast, easy and effective. I will experiment with Nampons more as opportunity arises, but so far I am pleased with this product. Nampons are another tool for the toolbox that would work especially well where weight and space are a consideration.

Did the job!

Worked well. Little stiff and uncomfortable to put in nostril but did the trick!
